History of Z-Arts 1979 to 2022

Check out the history of Z-Arts and let us know if you have any changes, updates, or corrections!

In the mid 1970’s, the Southern Utah Folklife Festival was organized by founder Larry McKown. Next he organized the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In the late 1970s, a needs assessment was conducted with the help of the Utah Arts Council. It was determined that a local arts council was needed in this small community perched at the entrance of Zion National Park, hence the formation of the Zion Canyon Arts and Humanities Council. Lila Moss held meetings asking residents what they wanted to see and do. Her persistence led to the governing articles of incorporation, registration with the state, and other structural foundations. Lila’s goal was to enable networking of local artists and establish arts education programming for local children. One of the early community-building projects was the creation of a community quilt, in which all residents were encouraged to contribute a single square. This quilt is now hanging in the Canyon Community Center Gallery. Like a tapestry, the entire community is a piece of art. Z-Arts has always been and strives to remain a community-focused organization. Z-Arts is the proud recipient of the Governor’s Leadership in the Arts Award. We are the oldest local arts agency in the state of Utah.

On average Z-Arts has hosted an average of 30 events annually (range from 6 to 67) in the fields of Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Literary, Film and Humanities. (Z-Arts supported the Music at the Zion Canyon Farmers Market in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017. Without counting these events the average is 27 per year with a range of 6 to 44.) Seeking opportunities to place artists in the schools to share their talents remains a high priority.

We have often received support from the community we serve. Volunteers are essential to our success and we know volunteering can change people’s lives.

Z-Arts was born in Summer 1979 (per verbal reports from several locals though no records were found before 1988 to document the various activities that took place up to then.)

The name changed in 1990 from Rio Virgin Arts Council to Zion Canyon Arts and Humanities Council – Z-Arts!

Board election info

From conversations with past officers, we learned that Z-Arts had officer elections until about 2006. Information from the past minutes included:

  • 5/2002 25% membership voted – 28 ballots (6 nominations for Pres, and 2 for VP positions)
  • 7/2004 – 7 ballots cast
  • 6/2005 – only 1 ballot submitted

Misc of importance (from the past minutes)

  • 5/2003 held open meeting for member input – 18 attendees
  • Late 2003 Board considered having Z-Arts disband (per email from Greer Chesher 12/15/04)
  • 2006 Z-Arts donated the piano to the CCC
  • Email from Greer Chesher – 12/15/04: before 2003 the holiday party was held in homes. In 2003, few people attended; in 2004, the annual party was held at Flanigans and sold out – two people complained that it was elitist since tickets sold out and they couldn’t attend. This was the first time to charge for food and music.
  • 6/2008 Hired Vicki Bell; Hired Joyce Hamilton 2016

Minute discussions

  • 8/1989-11/1992 much discussion about volunteers and burnout; programming; supporting artists
