Red Rock Rondo performs the Zion Canyon Song Cycle

You’re about to take a musical trek into the colorful world of Zion Canyon with Red Rock Rondo—a chamber folk ensemble who celebrates the history and contemporary life of Zion National Park with their Emmy-winning Zion Canyon Song Cycle. The songs are all based on stories and oral histories gathered here in Springdale, Rockville and Zion National Park.

The musicians in Red Rock Rondo are composer Phillip Bimstein, internationally-known recording artist Kate MacLeod, Deseret String Band and Cowboy Poetry Gathering founder Hal Cannon, virtuoso jazz bassist Harold Carr, and Salt Lake Symphony members, Flavia Cerviño-Wood and Charlotte Bell. Their music is a well-crafted synergy of folk, jazz and classical.

Composer and former Springdale mayor Phillip Bimstein composed Zion Canyon Song Cycle on a grant from the nationwide Continental Harmony commissioning program of the American Composers Forum. His alternative classical works have been performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Abravanel Hall, the Spoleto and Aspen Music Festivals, London’s Royal Opera House—and his punk rock videos appeared on MTV in the 1980s.

Red Rock Rondo’s CD hit #10 on the international Folk Radio charts, with the #7 song, “When President Harding Came to Zion.” A PBS music special about the song cycle won two Emmy Awards, for Best Arts Entertainment Program and Best Musical Composition. It also won Best TV Entertainment Show of the Year from NETA (The National Educational Telecommunications Association).

Special thanks to the Holiday Inn Express for providing lodging for the Red Rock Rondo performers.
