As the oldest, continuously operating arts council in the state of Utah, Z-Arts has a long and rich history. Here is a brief overview, with gratitude for all who came before to make Z-Arts the joy-sustaining entity it is today.

ZArts co-founders Larry and Lila

From the Beginning

In the mid 1970’s, the Southern Utah Folklife Festival was organized by founder Larry McKown. Next he organized the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In the late 1970s, a needs assessment was conducted with the help of the Utah Arts Council. It was determined that a local arts council was needed in this small community perched at the entrance of Zion National Park, hence the formation of the Zion Canyon Arts and Humanities Council.

Z-Arts Founders Larry McKown and Lila Moss

Lila Moss held meetings asking residents what they wanted to see and do. Her persistence led to the governing articles of incorporation, registration with the state, and other structural foundations. Lila’s goal was to enable networking of local artists and establish arts education programming for local children. One of the early community-building projects was the creation of a community quilt, in which all residents were encouraged to contribute a single square. This quilt is now hanging in the Canyon Community Center Gallery. Like a tapestry, the entire community is a piece of art. Z-Arts has always been and strives to remain a community-focused organization. Z-Arts is the proud recipient of the Governor’s Leadership in the Arts Award. We are the oldest local arts agency in the state of Utah.

On average Z-Arts has hosted an average of 30 events annually (range from 6 to 67) in the fields of Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Literary, Film and Humanities. (Z-Arts supported the Music at the Zion Canyon Farmers Market in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017. Without counting these events the average is 27 per year with a range of 6 to 44.) Seeking opportunities to place artists in the schools to share their talents remains a high priority.

We have often received support from the community we serve. Volunteers are essential to our success and we know volunteering can change people’s lives.

Z-Arts was born in Summer 1979 (per verbal reports from several locals though no records were found before 1988 to document the various activities that took place up to then.)

A Few Random Highlights

The name changed in 1990 from Rio Virgin Arts Council to Zion Canyon Arts and Humanities Council – Z-Arts!

Z-Arts Newsletters began in Summer 1990.

Z-Arts donated the piano to the Canyon Community Center in Springdale in 2006.

A Record of Past Z-Arts Events

The following was compiled from minutes and other records.

Attendance counts started in 2005, noted at the end of each posted event.  Unless otherwise noted, events after mid 2006 were held at the new Canyon Community Center.

Farmers Market music started in 2011 and ended in 2017.
