“MAY CAUSE DIZZINESS” Gallery Show

P1000320Z-Arts is proud to present the gallery show  “May Cause Dizziness, Recent Paintings by Chip Chapman”.  This show will be displayed in the Canyon Community Gallery beginning November 24 through January 4, 2016.

Chip has always enjoyed a hands on, creative approach to life. He has drawn, painted, photographed, composed and performed music, written and directed short films, and written prose and poetry. He studied and performed at CalArts in the Music Composition program before going to work at Caltech in the Physics department. He built lecture demonstration apparatus, high voltage power supplies and even hand constructed microcomputers all before the PC was invented. He designed laboratory and office environments that were built from his drawings, he worked with engineers at Intel to make improvements to their early parallel supercomputers and designed bold, colorful and inventive displays for scientific exhibitions. When he retired from Caltech, he was managing the Supercomputing Center.

In 2010 he moved with Susan, his wife of 39 years, to Hurricane, Utah. They became active in Z-Arts (he served as President during his three years on the Board) and various art making activities. Chip took a plein air painting class with J. Brad Holt and worked diligently to find his voice with paint. Deciding he wasn’t hardy enough to be a full-time plein air painter, he focused on exploring studio painting which lead to his current interest in using stencils. Stencils have a rich history in art dating over 37 thousand years.

Most of the abstract works in this exhibition were created using stencils. The stencils include kitchen sink mats, bbq grill trays, crochet doilies, drawer liner and other re-purposed materials as well as those he has hand drawn and cut. All of the pieces were created in 2015 and most are available for sale.
