Ricardo Cobo, Classic Latin Guitar

Ricardo Cobo will perform compositions from well known classical and Latin American composers including Leo Brouwer, Maximo Diego Pujol, Jorge Morel, Astor Piazzolla and others. Part of his performance will include the Requinto Guitar, a smaller guitar tuned one fourth higher than the standard classical guitar. His easy style of commenting on the composers and pieces he performs will transport the audience to another land of music.

Cobo began guitar lessons at the age of 8, playing on a twenty-dollar souvenir guitar his uncle brought back as a gift from Brazil.  He was accepted to the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore (USA),  where he began to work with  renown pedagogue, Aaron Shearer.  He obtained his BM from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, and his MM from Florida State University, where he pursued postgraduate studies with Bruce Holzman as a GA and University Doctoral Fellow. Most recently, Cobo has collaborated with living composers to develop new music for guitar based on the rich literary and cultural legacy of Latin America.  Through the IDB (Inter-development Bank), Chilean composer Javier Farías dedicated his “Romanzas de Rihoacha”, based on Gabriel García Marquez’s stunning autobiography, to Ricardo Cobo, who premiered the work in Washington DC last year: http://www.cctv-america.com/2015/01/25/classical-guitarist-ricardo-cobo-inspired-by-magical-realism.
