ALIVE INSIDE is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music. His camera reveals the uniquely human connection we find in music and how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short.
This stirring documentary follows numerous visionaries in healthcare including social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain), healthcare visionaries Dr. Bill Thomas, Dr. Al Powers, Naomi Fiel, and musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”).

Our panel will be lead by LuAnn Lundquist from Memory Matters of Utah, and teachers of the “Dementia Dialogues” with the Five County Association of Governments we have Sheri Reber and Tracy HeavyRunner.
LuAnn Pollock Lundquist
LuAnn is the founder of Memory Matters Utah, formerly the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Society. LuAnn graduated Magna Cum Laude from Northern Arizona University in the college of Social and Behavioral Science with a minor in Anthropology. She has worked for 10 years in the senior care industry in Southern Utah as a Therapeutic Recreation Technician and as a dementia care consultant and educator. Luann is a certified Dementia Dialogues trainer and has been an instructor for Foundations of Dementia Care and Maintain Your Brain programs. She has been a caregiver for two family members who have passed away with Alzheimer’s or Vascular Dementia. She feels that this is a calling and a blessing to work with caregivers and those who are challenged with dementia illnesses. LuAnn is married to Kurt Lundquist. They have four grown children and 11 ½ grandchildren.
Memory Matters is a community-based nonprofit organization which strives to be a center of excellence for persons with Alzheimer’s and all forms of dementia and their families by providing daycare programs, support services and education in a compassionate and dignified manner.
Tracy HeavyRunner
Tracy HeavyRunner is the Case Management Program Coordinator and is also a case manager for the Home & Community Based programs. She works in both the St. George and Cedar City offices. She is a licensed Social Service Worker and has been with Five County AOG since 1996.
Sheri Reber
Sheri Reber works for Five Counties Association of Government; she has had 10 years working with the aging population in both home and skilled nursing settings, as well as 10 years working with people with disabilities. She graduated with Bachelors in Social work. She is a licensed Social Service Worker, Certified Dementia Practitioner, Dementia Specialist, Dementia Dialogues Instructor, QIDP (qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional) RCI Reach Interventionist and a Therapeutic Recreation Technician.
Alzheimer’s is a disease that is close to Sheri’s heart, as her grandfather had Alzheimer’s, and she has seen the effects that it had not only for him but for other family members. Sheri loves to be a resource to others, helping them to find creative and meaningful ideas, activities and solutions.
Making “Alive Inside“ opened our eyes to the power of Music and Human Connection, to awaken forgotten souls- including our own. We discovered when a youth reaches out with music to an elder with cognitive challenges, there can be an ‘awakening’ for both. Today, many youth are losing the basic human connection skills that sustained us for millennia, and many elders are forgotten. We can change this! There are 46 million elders living with Alzheimer’s, 100 million lost kids, 100 million caregivers – all of them need to feel more alive and connected! Music is not a “cure,” but it is a teacher.
